Pinto, Serpa; translated by Alfred Elwes - How I Crossed Africa: From the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, Through Unknown Countries; Discovery of the Great Zambesi Affluents, &C

Hartford, Connecticut, R.W. Bliss and Company, 1881. Abridged Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy, a still attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy of the one-volume abridged form of the original true First Edition, this being translated by Alfred Elwes. Unbruised tips, lightly soiled paste-downs; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining. Burgundy cloth covers, moderately worn and soiled, but still sharp and distinct gilt lettering and illustration to cover, moderate rubbing of gilt lettering and illustration to spine. Bumping to and scuffing of spine head and foot. Some soiling to endpapers, else clean and unmarked but for some penciled notes on final page. Several dozen black-and-white illustrations, collated and complete, nearly two dozen of which that are in color. Fine frontis engraving on wood, tissue-guarded. Comprising Volume I -- The King's Rifle, with: Volume II -- The Coillard Family. A single page of publisher's ads. Lovely map showing the route the author took from Benguella to Durban. Marjor Serpa Pinto was an influential Portuguese traveler, said to have been one of the first Europeans to have traversed the continent of Africa from west to east. xiii [2], 406 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
